Abstract
This article analyzes the expression of pragmatic purpose in the translation of conditional mood units from English into Uzbek based on Ray Bradbury’s “The Martian Chronicles”. The study examines different grammatical forms of the conditional mood, their semantic and pragmatic features, and translation transformations occurring in the translation process. The communicative function of conditional constructions, their emotional and expressive influence, and their role in shaping the literary text are also discussed. The research proves that preserving pragmatic intention is one of the main tasks of a translator. Comparative, pragmatic, and contextual analysis methods were applied during the study. Conditional constructions such as “if”, “unless”, “provided that”, and “suppose” were analyzed in their Uzbek translations. The findings show that literal translation is not always sufficient to preserve pragmatic meaning and that functional equivalents play a significant role in literary translation. The article also highlights the importance of conditional structures in reflecting psychological states, hypothetical situations, and interpersonal relations in the novel. The results of the study may contribute to the development of translation studies and pragmalinguistics.
