Abstract

Allusions are often seen as references to names of famous people and popular fictional characters as well as well-known facts, historical events and places 'in order to conjure up some extra meaning, embodying some quality or characteristic for which the word has come to stand'Allusion is a widely used literary and rhetorical device in the English language. It involves an indirect reference to a well-known person, event, place, work of literature, or cultural phenomenon. This article explores the definition, types, functions, and examples of allusions in English, demonstrating their role in enriching language, conveying complex ideas, and establishing intertextual connections. Special attention is paid to allusions in literary texts, highlighting their effectiveness in communication and stylistic expression.
