RUDOLFO ANAYA’S BLESS ME, ULTIMA: A STUDY OF IDENTITY, CULTURE, AND SPIRITUAL AWAKENING
Abstract
Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima (1972) stands as one of the foundational works of Chicano literature. Set in the small town of Guadalupe, New Mexico, during the 1940s, the novel explores the coming-of-age story of a young boy, Antonio Márez y Luna, as he struggles to reconcile conflicting cultural, spiritual, and moral influences. Through poetic language, deep symbolism, and vivid cultural imagery, Anaya captures the complexity of Mexican-American identity, spirituality, and tradition.
