Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge is essential for understanding written texts in a foreign language. However, knowing individual word meanings does not always enable learners to understand the overall meaning of a text. They also need strategies that help them interpret unfamiliar words, recognize relationships between ideas, and retain new vocabulary. This article examines the role of vocabulary learning strategies in developing English reading comprehension competence. Drawing on relevant research, it discusses contextual inference, word analysis, dictionary use, and vocabulary review. It argues that these strategies are most useful when integrated into meaningful reading activities rather than taught as isolated techniques. A practical approach is proposed to help learners use vocabulary more independently and improve their understanding of English texts.
